The subject of this year’s World Day against Child Labor (06/12) was Eradication of the Child Labor in Productive Chains. For the ILO (International Labor Organization) the fight against Child Labor requires consistent policies, which support legislations focused on quality education, social protection and decent work for the adults.
This subject is also scheduled for the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, which restates the goal of child labor eradication. To this end, the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO) launched the on line course “End Child Labor in Agriculture”.
The course aims at securing that child labor prevention measures be included in rural and agricultural development programs, especially those related to small farmers. According to the agencies, the worst forms of child labor involve dangerous jobs which could harm the health and bring damage to the security of under aged.
In Brazil there are 3.3 million children and adolescents from 5 to 17 years old engaged in child labor. From this universe, 2.8 million work informally in towns as well as in the country. Children and adolescents work in small workshops or in their own homes, with their families and these cases can be invisible to entrepreneurs, to the supervisory bodies and to consumers. Families hired by businesses count on the work force of their children of less than 18 years of age to perform tasks or produce inputs which are incorporated into the products of big and medium productive chains. These products are primarily directed to the internal market but can also be routed for export.
Check below the number of working children and adolescents, by activity, and the selected jobs, according to data from the PNAD (National Survey on Domicile Samples) by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), 2016:
- 187,399 children and adolescents in the range of 10 to 17 years old work in Civil Construction;
- 18,752 children from 5 to 9 years of age work in Poultry Farming;
- 114,816 children and adolescents, in the range of 10 to 17 years old work in the Production and Trade of Textiles, Apparel and Accessories.
