Once more FCC S.A. leads and creates customized catalysts for the refineries it services in Latin America. Following a national trend of the gasoline market, FCC S.A. and Albermale have just developed catalysts able to provide the increase of the octane rating of the cracked naphta: the Action line. This demand raises because, presently, the fuel market is undergoing changes with the increase of the demand for octane rating of the cracked naphta, in some regions of the world.
These modifications occur both due to the prohibition of the MTBE (booster of octane rating), as well as due to the eventual shortage of other oxigenated compounds that might replace it, such as ethanol. Another source of pressure by octane rating is the beginning of the operation of the HDS unit of cracked naphta, that has caused reductions of the octane rating of the catalytical cracking gasoline.
Thus, forecasting the need of new catalysts to supply thos market segment in Latin America, it has been developed the Action line, which may be produced in the industrial plant of FCC S.A. in Brazil. The mechanism of increase of the octane rating is based on the increase of the generation of isomerized compounds. Such effect shall result in less octane rating losses in the naphtas that shall be submitted to the HDS process.
Another outstanding point of the Action line is the capacity to generate a more favorable relation between the gasoline loss production and the increase of the octane rating, in comparison with the use of conventional ZSM-5 additives. It also allows a better adjustment to units limited by gas compressors due to the smaller generation of LPG, if compared to the use of the above mentioned ZSM-5 additives. The Action catalysts also provide a better relative gain of octane rating per unit of gasoline lost in relation to the same additives.
The Action line is based on a new zeolitic system – ADZT 100 – that privileges the isomerization reactions within the naphta range, in detriment to the cracking reactions responsible for the conversion of gasoline to LPG. Thus, it is possible to get octane rating gains with lesser impact on the amount of LPG and cracked naphta produced.
