Cracking of heavy loads: the Brazilian differential that has caused a revolution in the petrochemical industry

Once more the “Fábrica Carioca de Catalisadores”  appears as a reference in the run for solutions even more complex for the new demands of the refining market. Two of its most competitive differentials – the research and the development of products and services tailored for its customers, always in line with the technological innovation and the preservation of the environment – have turned out be in the course of the years part of FCC S.A.’s identity

During an interview granted to “Jornal do Commércio” (Economics Section – edition of May, 1st., 2006), Armando Guedes Coelho, former Petrobras’ president and current superintendent director of Planning and Participations of “Suzano Petroquímica”, traces a scenery of what he considers the near future of the national petrochemical industry. He defends the search for new alternative solutions to the petroleum derivates for the petrochemical industry, which will result from new projects, such as the refinery that Petrobras will build in partnership with group “Ultra”, in Itaboraí, in Rio de Janeiro. “The project fits exactly in this scenery because it tries to occupy this space using extremely heavy petroleum in the production of petrochemical derivates”, evaluates Guedes.

According to him, the Itaboraí refinery “will cause a revolution in the petrochemical industry”. To this fact, Armando Guedes has added that Brazil is extremely more advanced in this technology than the other countries once it had time to solve a serious problem of excess of fuel oil during the 80/90 decade, by means of cracking of heavy loads. During the interview, he has pointed out that no other company in the world had the conditions to do that in a so economic manner as Petrobras, because it has joined the manufacturer (FCC S.A.), the formulator (FCC S.A. and Cenpes) and the user of the catalyst (Petrobras itself, through its refining units). “With this refinery all the problems of the Brazilian industry are more than solved, even so because the refinery shall produce all the basic petrochemicals: ethene, propene and aromatics. It is worth remembering that today, when selling the heavy petroleum, Petrobras sells it with a discount of up to US$ 15, which pays almost a refinery per year. Currently there is no project in Petrobras with the same feasibility and convenience of this project”, warrants the interviewed.
