With obtaining the Installation License of the future Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico (CSA) in mind, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) and ThysenKrupp Stahl A.G. groups started the Estudo de Impacto Ambiental (EIA) do Distrito Industrial de Santa Cruz (RJ) (Santa Cruz Industrial District’s Study of Environmental Impact). This analysis, a mandatory request by the Brazilian environmental legislation, precedes the implantation of any production unit.
With the intention of making the EIA viable, the companies involved have just established a partnership with Fábrica Carioca de Catalisadores (Rio de Janeiro Catalyst Factory), which gave out its space for the installation of a unit to continuously monitor that region’s levels of air quality. The automatic environmental station will be in operation for 60 days, linked to a supervision center via telecommunication system. During this whole period, FCC SA will also receive important information on local air quality, with measurements of Total Particles in Suspension (PTS), Breathable Particles lesser than 10 microns (PM10), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Ozone (O3) and Carbon Monoxide (CO). The reports issued can be used in the improvement of the Environment Management System on the catalyst plant.
CSA has scheduled operation startup for 2008. The iron metallurgy will have capacity to produce 4.4 million tons of steel-plates, which will be used for exportation.
